Essay on Hip Hop Culture - 2107 Words

Hip Hop Culture Since the early to mid 90’s, hip-hop has undergone changes that purists would consider degenerating to its culture. At the root of these changes is what has been called â€Å"commercial hip-hop. Commercial hip-hop has deteriorated what so many emcees in the 80’s tried to build- a culture of music, dance, creativity, and artistry that would give people not only something to bob their head to, but also an avenue to express themselves and deliver a positive message to their surroundings. What does the term â€Å"commercial† mean? It can take on various meanings, but in essence that term is used to label artists who have alienated parts of the hip-hop culture in their work. They play small, sometimes dark and dank venues in front of a couple hundred people or much less than that. Like the Christians in ancient Rome who held mass in catacombs and spread their religion secretly, underground artists are privately leading a revolution in these small clubs now in promotion of returning rap to hip-hop, and there probably has never been such a fierce fire lit under the artists like there is now to bring change. Underground artists are fed up with how hip-hop is treated by a lot of major labels that have changed the structure of songs. In 2000, especially on the radio, you may hear one or two verses, an RB singer lacing the track and then a hook that is repeated enough times to take up 3 plus minutes. This is a brash example of today’s state of hip-hop, but the point is made- creativity in hip-hop has been pushed aside for tracks that incorporate overused samples, have no real message, and have virtually eliminated the DJ from the music. Remember when you could listen to a song for five minutes and all you heard was Rakim bouncing outrageous similes and euphemisms off his tongue and Eric B. blessing the 1s and 2s. Causes of maternal mortality and maternal morbidity According to Ashford (2002), maternal mortality and morbidity rates in Indonesia have the highest figures from the rest of the countries. This was amplified by the non-utilization of the maternal healthcare. This is because they were not able to receive standard World Health Organization antenatal care (ATC) visits. The figure below illustrate on the difference in mortality rates on developing countries compared to the one already developed. The main cause include: Hemorrhage- this has greatly contributed to a rise of death accompanied by excessive bleeding. It a major risk factor which is brought about by child birth. However, women bleed heavily leading to approximately 26% of women deaths as researched by World Health Organization. The excessive bleeding becomes uncontrollable especially when discovered too late. The blood is entire drained from the body making the victim so weak thus demise of a life. Infection- they are deaths caused by infection such as HIV, Heart diseases and anemia. Infected diseases such as HIV poses a great risk on the expecting mother. It is however said to claim life especially to those much affected. The same causes deterioration in health where the white blood cells are reduced to a level of not fighting other infections (Filippi et al., 2007). Moreover, in case there is anemia, not enough red blood cells are produced which in return affects the blood circulation in the body. The heart is however affected causing cardiovascular disorders. These will trigger a heart failure leading to death. This contributes to 17% as stated by World Health Organization (WHO) (Chhabra et al., 2008). Unsafe abortions- in most cases, women who conceive without their knowledge prefers to have the pregnancy terminated without following the right procedures. The process is mainly done by unqualified personnel who in return end up causing more damage to the victim. As a result, excessive bleeding and infection are experienced. The womb may be destroyed in the process thus severe implication on health in later days. Some of the key strategies involves investing in qualified medical person to take care of the patient during and after the patient has given birth. Trained personnel provides the basis for assisting mothers and effectively preventing maternal mortality which is influenced by the quality of care provided in healthcare settings (Haddad et al., 2011). Additionally, the knowledge and skills gained by the healthcare providers empowers them to effectively help the patients as well as educate them on maternal mortality and the associated risk factors. Educating the people to change and making an improvement in childbirth delivery in hospitals and clinics, and this is achieved by focusing on quality maternal and child health services by delivering facilities that are equipped with emergency and obstetric and neonatal care services. The strategy is required since some of the healthcare providers lack enough knowledge and skills to identify the patients at risk (Furuta, Sandall Bick, 2012). The second key strategy that can be adopted involves improving the resource need of the hospital and clinics, which are used in the surgical emergency. In most cases pregnant women require emergency services or care in order to prevent the cases of maternal mortality which is prevalent in the Indonesia. However, the lack of resources and service facilities in healthcare settings is a key contributor to the high death rate, which creates the need to ensure the healthcare organizations have the necessary resources (Ellison, De Wet, Matshidze Cooper, 2000). The third key strategy that can be adopted to address the high cases of maternal mortality and morbidity in Indonesia, involves focusing on the healthcare providers through concession or increase payment to the doctors and nurse can motivate and give a better service. Motivation of the healthcare providers provides the basis for empowering them to deliver high quality care as well as enhance their commitment to address the patients problems in order to address the maternal mortality rate (Filippi et al, 2000). The strategy is effective since it enhances the ability of the healthcare providers to deliver quality patient-centered care as well as continually engage the patients in order to promote positive outcomes (Khan et al., 2006). Another key strategy which is critical in the developing countries involves establishing training and education programs for young girls and women on maternal mortality and the risk factors. Such programs are critical since a majority of the pregnant women in Indonesia lack the knowledge on the risk factors that influence maternal mortality. This is achieved by promoting the preventive health programs which will requires promoting a continuum of care right from adolescent and pre-pregnancy period through pregnancy, delivering up to childhood. Establishing laws or policies on maternal morbidity and mortality can help in reducing the risk factors such as early abortion which is a key contributor. This can be achieved by creating awareness among the young people or youth to avoid misbehaviors like unprotected intercourse, drug abuse among others. Establishing laws and effectively ensuring compliance promotes the chances of addressing the risk factors, come up with the effective measures to curb them as well as promoting the healthcare providers commitment to the health issue will help in raising up a healthy community (Calvert et al., 2012). According to Dolea Stein (2003), expanding maternal health services to different areas can also significantly help in reducing the mortality rate since a majority of the cases are influenced by poor access to the healthcare services primarily in rural settings. Based on the idea that the country is developing, the healthcare system is not well established which contributes to the high rate of death (Filippi et al., 2007). However, government support in the expansion of maternal health services can play a significant role in reducing the mortality rate as well as educating the population on the risk factors and how to avoid them. The government should work towards supporting the communities, districts and cities that have insufficient infrastructures to achieve the minimum service standards by setting standards that that will ensure regional or geographic balance through equal wealth distribution and delivery of service without favoring either side. Besides, the government can also s upport that objective by reducing the overall cost of care which also limits effective access to healthcare. A reduction of the patient fees for health care and other services such as emergency transport and mobile healthcare support can reduce maternal mortality (Kaye, Kakaire Osinde, 2011). On the other hand, empowering women to leadership and constant engagement with the community members can help spread knowledge and ideas on the risk factors as well as support policies that help reduce the mortality rate. The mothers or women and the health workers should be trained on how to prevent and treat common childhood diseases in order to curb the high level of deaths that results from common infections like diarrhea ,acute respiratory and malaria, which can be prevented.However,they require timely recognition,knowledge,treatment and by implementing standard by the public and private healthcare providers. The aspect further promotes access to quality and reliable healthcare services thus reducing the overall maternal mortality and morbidity rate. The strategy is deemed effective since it increases knowledge and understanding on the risk factors while supporting the care provided by effective policies. Additionally, a collaborative approach to healthcare provision can play a significant role in addressing the maternal mortality and morbidity rate by ensuring all the key stakeholders play a key part in improving the care provision and education to the pregnant women (Dolea Abouzahr, 2003). A collaborative approach ensures widespread commitment to reducing the high cases of mortality as well as supporting positive outcomes. Mothers should be taught on the importance of breastfeeding because from the 2007 IDHS reports indicates that infants under the age of six months were breastfed exclusively (Ministry of Health, 2008). This showed that majority of infants in Indonesia did not receive the benefits of breastmilk. Therefore, constant training and creating awareness will help in educating the mothers the importance of breastfeeding their children, among them being nutritional benefits and protection against diseases. It also helps address key issues such as resource need and educational needs. (Hardee, Gay Blanc, 2012). Conclusion Women in the developing countries tend to acquire poor treatment or none at all. However, analytical approach of the current problems will help reduce mortality rate in the rural or semi-urban areas. It is therefore important to adopt the SMI (Safe Motherhood Initiative) in the Sub-Saharan Africa since the same was implement two decade ago in the developed countries. Such initiatives have a significant role in empowering women with necessary knowledge and skills to effectively address the maternal mortality risk factors. Additionally, it plays a significant role in enhancing the government's commitment to the overall improvement of the maternal mortality as well as enhancing the quality of care. This will help prevent the invisible death during child birth. It is necessary to invest in good clinic and hospital to avoid more death from happening. A collaborative approach can also help in addressing the maternal mortality rate by ensuring all the key stakeholders are involved in suppor ting pregnant women in reducing the risk factors. At national level, the private health providers should collaborate with government and be part of making the health policies and frameworks so that the combined efforts will ensure that the services provided are of high standards .Private healthcare providers and the training facilities plays a major role in Indonesian health system and joining hands with the government health policies, information delivery systems and standards will ensure a healthy population is grown and taken care of. Regulation, inspection and the certification of private healthcare providers should comply with the government standards and information systems so that they can deliver their services and be reliable to the public at large. Heath information systems in Indonesia need to be harmonized and re-centralized in certain ways relating to the health information systems, especially those regarding processes, reports and standards so that the public can get the health information at the right time, form and a cted upon. Still, the 5 rate is so low that it can’t be completely attributed to the volume of students. Is the AP Biology Content Difficult? There’s no question that the breadth of content covered in AP Biology is extensive. It requires memorization of complex processes along with a deep understanding of how biological concepts and themes connect with one another. Since there’s a lot of memorization involved, the actual study skills that you need to succeed are somewhat similar to those required in social studies classes. For instance, an understanding of the young infant stage, babies develop a sense of security from their caregivers. It is this sense of security, that allows the baby to build an urge to explore, later motivating them to take risks and advance their current knowledge of their environment. This may require removing all sharp objects from the area and covering electrical outlets and ensuring. However, prepping the room for child safety is not the only concern. It is imperative to play close attention, and respond to the needs of young infants. Nery oung children need adults who listen, smile, and talk with them or babble when they babble; watch for when they need quiet and solitude; and notice and communicate pleasure over such newfound skills as creeping, climbing, holding, dropping, or adding new sounds and words (Greenman, Stonehouse, and Schweikert, 2008, pg. 61). An understanding of the toddler stage of development enables caring adults to guide and assist young childrens emotional development. The first two years of a persons life can set the foundation for the way hey create relationships, view others, and understand emotions and how to control them. A toddlers sense of self, of I and me, emerge in a group environment and a culture which private property and the acquisition of things are somewhat scared. Infant Toddler Curriculum Because of the specific needs of infants and toddlers the term curriculum is during he early stages of development is complex. To summarize all of the ideas of curriculum, as defined by leaders in the field (Gonzalez-Mena, Eyer, Dodge, Greenman, Stonehouse, Schwikert, Swim, and Watson), you must think about curriculum as an organized framework. To make curriculum DAP for infant and toddlers, it must be based on sound and relevant knowledge such as infant/ toddler development and research; so that it guides early care professional practices in providing purposeful and responsive learning opportunities for each child through daily routines and experiences (Blackboard, 2013) Infant and toddler curriculum plans focus on how to best create a social, emotional, and intellectual climate that supports child-initiated and child-pursued learning. The interests of the child and the belief that each child has a curriculum are what drive practice (Blackboard, 2013). It is understood that very young children need to play a significant role in selecting their learning experiences, materials, and content. Curriculum plans, therefore, do not focus on games, tasks, or activities, but on how to best create a social, emotional, and intellectual climate that supports child-initiated and child- ursued learning and the building and sustaining of positive relationships among adults and children. Responsive curriculum planning focuses on finding strategies to help infant-toddler teachers search for, support, and keep alive childrens internal motivation to learn, and their spontaneous explorations of people and things of interest and importance to them (Blackboard, 2013). This should begin with study of the specific children in care. Detailed records of each childs interests and skills are kept to give guidance to the adults for the roles t hey will take in each childs learning Greenman, Stonehouse, and Schweikert, 2008, pg. 30). It should also be realized from the start that plans should not be static. Adaptation and change are critical parts of the learning process and should be anticipated. Once an interaction with a child or small cluster of children begins, the teacher has to be ready to adapt his or ner plans and actions so they work tor all children, no matter what kind ot physical , mental or emotional challenges individual bring to the program (Greenman, Stonehouse, and Schweikert, 2008, pg. 30). Another essential component of planning s attention to a responsive learning environment and specific attention to how environments should be changed. The planning of learning environments is more important to infant-toddler development than specific lessons or specific activities. The environment must be seen as part of the curriculum, creating interest and encouraging and supporting exploration (Blackboard, 2013). Research has shown that much of how infants and toddlers learn best comes not from specific adult- directed lessons but from teachers knowing how to maximize opportunities for each child to use natural learning inclinations. The philosophy of routine care as learning opportunities for infants and toddlers is based on the premise that, Relationships develop through all kinds of interactions, but especially during ones that happen while adults are carrying out those essential activities of daily living sometimes called caregiving routines (Greenman, Stonehouse, and Schweikert, 2008, pg. 5), such as: feeding, diapering; toilet training/learning; washing; bathing and grooming; dressing; napping. For caregiving routines to become curriculum, they cant be done mechanically.

As a kid you grow up learning new things, you ask questions and you hope that in return you get answers. A question that is often asked is ‘what came first, the chicken or the egg, or how is our food made?’ Many people find answers for things that they don’t know about, but what one doesn’t know might be better for them. What I can tell you is how chickens are raised and the many different ways that they are brought up. What I cant tell you is what came first, the chicken or the egg. I can tell you the difference from a chicken that was brought up in a factory farm from a chicken that was brought up in your back yard. There is a big difference from a factory chicken from a back yard chicken, such as the type of food they are fed, or their living space. Chickens are fed foods that have chemicals in them that can get into the human body. They are also tortured when they are brought up in factories because the chickens are kept in cages where there for four of them will be stuffed into one cage. Chickens are clipped on their feet and beaks so that when they are in a stressful situation they will not peck at the other chickens when they are all in the same cage. Chickens are carried from one factory to another in a truck where over half of the chickens die. The government call these facilities Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations or CAFO’s. The (EPA) otherwise known as the Environmental Protection Agency defines a CAFO as the â€Å"new and existing operations which stable or confine and feed or maintain for a total of 45 days or more in any 12-month period more than the number of animals specified† in categories that they list out. Also there will be no grass or other vegetation in the confined areas. Factory farming mainly began a... ...es and fats. Pasturing is also a cost-effective and healthy way to raise chickens. It is both good for the environment and the chicken itself. Chickens that are brought up on a farm have a better life and their meat is healthier for the consumer. If you go out and buy chicken from a store, you have no idea what kind of process that meat has been through or what has been added to it. You could be eating something that could get you very sick or even kill you. Factories should have law and those laws should state that artificial growth is illegal and not healthy for our food. If every person in the world took a step back and realized how our everyday food effects our lives or the environment around us we might find better ways to make a profit. So the next time you go to ask a question about where something comes from, you might want to think twice about it.

Sociocultural The article I read was called â€Å"Rich Children and Poor Children are living in different world. What can we do about it? † by Neil O’Brien. The article is about the different life styles of children who grow up in a rich and wealthier family rather than a lower class family. The differences are abundant and it is setting kids up who come from the lower class families up for failure. The children that grow up in the wealthier family are around success their entire lives so based on the sociocultural perspective they are more inclined to be successful and have a want to be successful.Compared to the children that come from a lower class family they are around failure and bad examples, so when they get older it is all they know how to do. It can be argued that it is not the parents fault entirely and plenty of people who come from poverty and lower class families are successful but in reality the number of those people compared to the number of people that do not make it to be successful is not much. The kids are doomed from the start because they do not know how to be successful whereas the children of wealthier families do.The problem stems from their at home lives but it is not the root of it all, kids learn from their environment at school. The children of wealthy families either live in good public school districts or send their kids to good private schools to receive their education. That benefits those children because they are put in a situation where they can be taught by top educators with top of the line books and technology. Whereas the children of poor families live in cheap, affordable neighborhoods that most of the time do not have the best school districts.That sets those children up for failure because they go to a school with less funding, so top qualified teachers are less likely to want to work there, the books are not as up to date, and the technology is not modern. Therefore the children learning at those school s are not getting as strong of an education. What O’Brien is saying in his article is that unfairness of education needs to be fixed and that has been an on-going problem in big cities especially in Chicago.Once that problem is fixed then the children would be one step closer to being on an even playing field and would be more likely to be successful someday. FastServe has a tough decision to make. The five employees on the list have their own sets of good and bad points. Termination of an employment needs to be handled with care to avoid facing three labor suits. Being a direct marketing organization, what the company needs are people who have the skills that are useful in its kind of business. Since the company is closing down its online marketing and distribution channels, it does not need people whose skills are limited on those areas. It needs to retain people who can make positive contributions to its main business. The first consideration that FastServe must take note of is how that employee will contribute to the direct marketing business. In line with this, FastServe takes productivity into serious consideration. Next, the company must also take into account other things like compliance with the company's policy on attendance, work performance, productivity, and work redundancy. Another important thing to consider is the employees' work status, whether they are full-time, contractual, or under a labor bargaining agreement. This is a very important consideration to avoid abuse of the Employment At Will doctrine. Finally, the company must take into account the different anti-discrimination in the workplace laws . Each person on the list could file for discrimination when terminated because each one of them falls under the protected minority. Before FastServe will have to choose the final three people for termination, the company must talk to each one of them and give them time to defend themselves or improve on weak areas. Even if the layoff is not on a large scale basis and would not violate the WARN Act, or the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, it still would be humane and preventing legal actions if the company would do this act. Carl Haimes – Retain Of all the employees on the list, Carl Haimes has the best record. His overall track record performance is above average, the highest and only one in the group. In terms of productivity, he also scored above the median, which is what the company would like to see among its employees. In terms of education, Haimes has a degree in Information Systems, a skill that is useful in marketing. He is also a qualified systems analyst, an important asset to a marketing company that needs to have marketing systems in place. Haimes' computer maintenance skills and LAN installation skills for three platforms will come handy for the maintenance of the company's databases and electronic marketing portfolio. Haimes will also be useful when the company will be automating its systems. Strictly from skills and qualifications, Haimes is a clear candidate for retention. To improve Haimes' chances for retention, no one has made any complaint on his behavior or work ethics. Moreover, the company has no problem with his attendance, the only one in the group. Haimes' contract need not be an issue since the company would be retaining him. Haimes is gay and his sexual orientation could become a problem in conservative and traditional companies. Fortunately, FastServe, being a marketer, could not afford to be intolerant to diversity in the workplace. Diversity is what it needs to survive in a highly competitive environment. Retaining Haimes would benefit the company because of his skills, qualifications and adherence to company policies. Lastly, Haimes can't be terminated because there is nothing that the company would find undesirable in his performance. Besides, Haimes could file for sexual discrimination if he gets terminated knowing that among the five, he is the most qualified and the best performer. Brian Carter – Terminate In Brian Carter's case, the company must be very careful that it won't be sued with violation against the Disability Act of 1995 since this employee has a carpal tunnel syndrome. Should Brian passed the medical tests, then, FastServe cannot terminate him because of this problem. Brian cannot continue with his employment with FastServe for various reasons even if he does not suffer from a wrist problem. First, Brian's skills are highly specialized and limited to programming, which is very useful in the online distribution channels but not on direct marketing. Brian, being a techie guy, is unlikely to fit in a direct marketing kind of work even if he had a chance to train for marketing-related functions. He is a computer kind of guy and would feel more comfortable facing a workstation instead of facing people. Besides, Brian won't find it difficult to find new employment since his skills are highly sought after in todays environment. The company can terminate him at will because his expertise is not needed anymore. Second, Brian has a staggering 17 days absences in a two-month period, the highest among the five of them, and a fact that made his supervisor dislike him. He could have improved on his performance and productivity if Brian weren't absent for that many days. Terminating Brian would benefit the company because he will become an underperforming asset should his employment with the company continue. Sarah Boyd – Retain Sarah Boyd is the second employee that FastServe should retain. She's with the company for 15 years and her status is full time. But her retention are not simply based on those two factors. Of the three remaining persons on the list, Sarah has the lowest number of days absent in a two-month period. Her overall track performance is average while her productivity is median. Sarah is capable of managing and administering an office, skills that are useful in a marketing company. Also, she's the only person who knows office procedure better than anyone else. Her prioritizing and sorting skills could become redundant when the company will automate its processes. However, it would take time for the automation to be implemented. While waiting for that time, Sarah could continue doing her job and she could be taught other skills. Besides, Sarah is 53 years old and protected under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. So long as Sarah is able and capable of doing her tasks, the company can't make her retire against her will. However, should the company find the need to replace Sarah when she reaches 55 years old, FastServe could offer her an early retirement package that is attractive, fair and equitable. Nora Manson – Terminate Nora Manson's overall performance is above average but her productivity is below median. The company is currently focused on high productivity from their employees and Nora falls short of that goal. There is also the question of Nora's absenteeism that has already accumulated into two months. This is very high and would raise questions on her job loyalty. Another point against Nora is on her loyalty to FastServe. She has been directing employees to file discrimination complaints against the company she works for. Nora's participation in discrimination charges against FastServe is protected by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These acts may be in accordance to her personal values and are protected by law but these do not show loyalty to FastServe. Being an advocate of fair treatment need not mean going to the labor court right away. Nora could have acted as intermediary to prevent labor suits. On the positive side, Nora has rescued two big accounts and is skilled in handling irate and upset callers. She's also skilled in other aspects of making sales. Despite her positive contributions, Nora is too radical to become an asset to the company. While the company cannot take it against her to be watchful of discrimination, her work shouldn't have been affected by all of her non-work related activities. Her activities with her affiliation could have been the reason why Nora's productivity is low. FastServe should end Nora's employment so long as her contract allows the company to do that. If the employment is for a definite period of time, then the company can use her performance, productivity and absenteeism problems as the ground for her termination. However, the company should be prepared to handle discrimination complaints that Nora may file against it considering that she is an African-American and is an active member of NAACP. Jenny Mills – Terminate Jenny Mills should also be terminated. Although the law prohibits termination of women because of pregnancy, the company won't be ending Jenny's employment because of that. She is on contract and her attendance is very bad. She is also taking extra breaks that are not supposedly allowed and this make male employees complain. Jenny cannot use as an excuse her pregnancy for the 14 days of absence in a period of one month. Pregnancies are mostly difficult in the first two months and once a woman is already beyond that, her condition would be better. Jenny is already five months pregnant and there are no indications that it is a difficult pregnancy. Although she holds a degree in public relations, she has no special achievements. Her skills are also limited to answering queries from customers and troubleshooting common instruments problems. These skills can easily be taught to other persons. The company can even delegate these tasks to Sarah Boyd so that when it is time to automate, Sarah would be useful in other areas.
